Virginia “Ginny” Kerns
December 25, 1929 – January 18, 2017

Born on December 25, 1929, to Louis and Ellenora (Nielsen) Dettmann, in Gilmore City, Iowa, Ginny passed away on January 18, 2017, in Pella, Iowa.

After she graduated from Emmetsburg High School and the Iowa Beauty Academy of Des Moines, Ginny married William Kerns on June 3, 1956. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children: Kaye and Kyle. Ginny and Bill farmed in Marathon where she ran her own beauty shop and raised her family. In 1993, they retired to Midway, Arkansas, and Bill passed away in 2009. In May 2016, Ginny moved to Pella. A loving and very generous person with a positive attitude, she cared dearly for her family. Fun-loving, in addition, she had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed tending her flowers, knitting, quilting, dancing, playing cards, and helping with the Albert City Threshermen’s Show. Moreover, she belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

An active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa, Christ by the Lake Lutheran Church in Bull Shoals, Arkansas, and most recently, of Peace Lutheran Church in Pella, Iowa, Ginny enjoyed Bible Study, taught Sunday school, and actively participated in church events.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two children and their families: Jamie (Danny) Brown and Kaye Patterson (and the late Jim), all of Olympia, Washington, Amanda Patterson, and her fiancé, Nathan, of Eureka, Montana, Morgan and Lincoln due soon, Kyle and Leona Kerns, of Pella, Iowa, Joshua (Tiffany) Spence, of Tecumseh, Missouri, Cooper, Joseph, and Kaleigh Kerns, and fiancé Jason Schomacker, of Hardwick, Minnesota, Korie and Keller Kerns, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and Michael Spence, of Willow Springs, Missouri; her sister, Mary Hagerman, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Barb Kerns, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and Jim and Carol Kerns, of Republic, Missouri; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; and her brothers-in-law, Ken Hagerman and Donald Kerns.
