Evelyn M. Cook
May 11, 1923 - January 8, 2017

Evelyn M. Cook, age 93, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 8, 2017, in Davenport.

Evelyn, a daughter of Roy and Opal (Sansen) Schroeder, was born on May 11, 1923, in Aurelia, Iowa. While attending Aurelia and Battle Creek schools, she enjoyed tap dancing and performing at the Holstein and Cherokee High Schools. She, also, had fun playing the French Horn, English Horn, Tuba, and Clarinet. In addition, she belonged to the Girl Scouts. After graduating from Storm Lake High School, she worked in accounting at the Old Baltimore Bayline, in Baltimore, Maryland.

On July 25th, 1942, she married Loren Everett Cook. She and Loren had a beautiful double wedding at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Loren’s sister Elaine and husband Bert Lawrence. They lived in Newell for a short time before farming in the Fonda area. An active member of the Holy Family Society, the Rosary Society, and the Catholic Daughters of America at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fonda as well as a busy farm wife and mother of four children, she seemingly never had a free moment. Nonetheless, she managed to spend many relaxing hours playing bridge, pinochle, and 500. Moreover, she loved to read and went to the library weekly.

Evelyn cherished her memories of playing golf with Loren and dancing with him at the Cobblestone. They loved to jitterbug, and one time, they, even, won a dance trophy. Everyone enjoyed watching them. Of course, her family loved to visit her. She made family times special with awesome meals (especially with swiss steak), games, and laughter. Indeed, her smile and laughter made Christmas the best. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will, forever, remember their visits at Grandma’s house. She made each one feel extra special.

Retiring from farming, Evelyn and Loren moved to Laurens. They continued to enjoy golf with friends, but she, now, had to spend much of her time caring for her mother, her mother-in-law, and Loren. She, truly, gave of herself. She had a caring heart that uplifted others with a lot of teasing and laughter.

She lived her last three years at the Good Samaritan in Davenport, where she made many friends among staff and residents. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Family members left to cherish her memory include her children: Karen (Tim) Peterson, of Sun City West, Arizona, Lynn (Dennis) Hamilton, of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Lori (Warren) Hudson, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; seven grandchildren: Allen and Andrea Cook, Robyn (Jeff) Goree, Chad (Sarah) Hamilton, Kim (Mark) Holt, Kendall Hudson, and Kurt (Jackie) Peterson; eleven great grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother; her husband Loren; her son, Craig Cook, and her sisters, Aurelia Hitchcock and Lois Peck, and her great grandchild, Kaden Bollenbach.

A funeral mass will be offered Thursday, January 12, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Laurens, Iowa. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
