Roger Lee Stephan
July 14, 1941 - August 25, 2016Roger L. Stephan, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on August 25, 2016, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Roger Lee Stephan, a son of Leonel “Bill” and Esther (Skow) Stephan, was born on July 14, 1941, in Storm Lake. Baptized as an infant on January 19, 1942, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa, and later confirmed on March 29, 1953, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, he attended school in the Storm Lake Community School District. While in high school, he enjoyed playing football.
On April 3, 1960, Roger married Aletha Mae Anderson at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Randall Lee, Bryan James, Cheri Lynn, Robin Annette, and Angela Mae.
As a young lad, Roger had served as a bat boy for the Storm Lake White Caps Semi Pro baseball team. In that capacity, he developed a love for baseball which led to his becoming a board member and a coach for Little League Baseball for many years. Indeed, he led his team to a second place finish in the state. He, also, coached softball for the men’s slow pitch team for several years.
A member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake and the Cub Scouts, Roger, also, served on the Storm Lake Fire Department for twenty years.
Roger valued spending time with his children and grandchildren as well as attending their activities. After he retired, he enjoyed woodworking, doing crafts, and going to various craft shows. In addition, he enjoyed traveling to variety of destinations including Branson, Missouri; Dover, Delaware; Arvada, Colorado; and the Amana Colonies. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of fifty-six wonderful years, Aletha Mae Stephan, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Randy (Rachel) Stephan, of Alta, Iowa, and Angie Andrade, Cheri (Wade) Nehring, and Bryan (special friend, Tina Leewright) and Robin Stephan, all of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Cambrie and Myiah Andrade; Lexi Moon; Justin (Katie) Nehring; Adam, Alex, and Aric Stephan; and Aaron Zimmer; his great grandchildren: Kellan Cowell and Camden and Stryker Hidden; his brother, Dick (Pam) Stephan, of Sioux City, Iowa; his sisters: Maureen (Larry) Oster, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Marcia (Mike) Lane, of Arvada, Colorado; his sister-in-law, Nancy Kalbaum; and his special friends, Jay and Misty Nissen, and their daughter; as well as many cousins; nieces; nephews; extended family members, and many friends.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Esther Stephan; his mother-in-law, Lois Whalen; his daughter-in-law, Lisa Stephan; his grandparents; his aunts and uncles; his cousin, Curt McVey; and his brother-in-law, Armin Klima.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place Monday, August 29, 2016, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake with the family present the entire time. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
