Elizabeth E. Jarvis
Mar 7, 1912 - Jun 22, 2016

Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of Alta, Iowa

Elizabeth E. Jarvis, age 104, of Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of Alta, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Elizabeth Eleanor Robinson Jarvis was born to Mary Bailey Robinson and James Duncan Robinson in Schaller, Iowa, on March 7, 1912. She attended school and then graduated from high school in 1930. Next, she earned a degree from Iowa State Teacher's College (now UNI). From 1932 to 1934, she taught grade school at Schaller.

In 1934, Elizabeth married Fred M. Jarvis in a garden wedding in Schaller. They had two children, their son, Byford Duncan ("Bud"), and their daughter, Joanie or Joan. In 1946, the family moved from Schaller to a farm they purchased on the southwest edge of Alta. A dedicated and treasured teacher who loved teaching and her many students, Elizabeth taught in the Alta Public School System for twenty-five years, primarily second grade. After she became a widow in 1976, she continued to reside on the cherished family farm where family and friends regularly visited, always welcomed, served delicious meals or refreshments, and felt at home.

Throughout her adult life, Elizabeth was active in the Alta Presbyterian Church, PEO, and Eastern Star as well as in other professional and honorary educational organizations. She greatly enjoyed spending time with people, reading books, traveling, singing hymns, initiating daily fitness walking, and logging miles around Storm Lake and the Alta high school track. At age 95, she relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, to be with her daughter. Joan, and youngest granddaughter, Rachel, asking both to oversee her eventual elder care needs.

Regardless of her circumstances, for 104 years, Elizabeth, always, lived up to her given name meaning, "My God is abundance." According to the Holy Bible, Jesus said, "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Elizabeth's earthly life exemplified this Biblical verse as she gave of herself, her time, her effort, her talents, and her financial means so that others could experience an abundant life and share in the same Blessed Assurance.

In addition to her generous caring, supportive, and adventurous spirit, Elizabeth will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, always well-disposed, thankful, dignified, ready to help, willing to make peace, independent as well as interdependent, determined, her uplifting "therapeutic" presence that exuded unconditional love, acceptance, and tranquility appreciating and enriching the lives of everyone she met. Elizabeth lived a healthy, upright, Christian life focused on her family. A one-of-a-kind very special person, Elizabeth had an endearing presence that will be greatly missed and forever valued.

She is survived by her son, Byford (wife Rachel), and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Dan (Janet) and Emily and Christopher; Tom (Susan) and Trent and Jenna; Paul (Melanie) and James and Hannah; Ann (David) and Ben, Michael, and Katelyn; her daughter, Joan (husband Ed) and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Rachel (widowed); Nathan (Michelle) and Joshua, Caleb, Abigail, Anna, and Elizabeth. Her five siblings preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at 10:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Alta with the Rev. Duane Queen officiating. Burial will follow at the Cook Center Cemetery of Schaller. Visitation will take place one hour prior to services at the church.

Submitted by granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Stivers-Stewart, of Lincoln, Nebraska.
