Adeline Marie Appleseth
October 9, 1936 - August 7, 2016

Adeline Marie Hubbard Appleseth entered into eternal rest on August 7, 2016, in Storm Lake, Iowa, at the age of 79. She had lived with cancer for eighteen years.

Addie, as she was known to those who loved her, was born to Edward and Ursula (Hartfiel) Hubbard in Cumberland, Wisconsin, on October 9, 1936. After her father’s death in 1940, her mother and sister, Rosella (Rosie), moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, to live with her uncle, Adolph Hartfiel, and her grandmother, Emma Hartfiel. In 1944, her mother, Ursula, married Paul Just, and the family moved to his farm near Boyd, Minnesota.

Addie walked to country school, was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Tyro Township, near Boyd in 1949, and graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1954. Then, she worked in a bank until she met the handsome George Franklin Appleseth, whom she married at her home church on June 12, 1955. After the birth of the young couple’s first daughter, Cynthia Ann, George followed his brother-in-law, Curtis Sorum, to pharmacy school at South Dakota State University. A homemaker, Addie gave birth to two more daughters, Diane Marie and Kathryn Eileen, before George graduated in 1960.

After George graduated, the Appleseth family moved to Ottumwa where George worked at McWilliam’s Drug Store and their fourth daughter, Kaye Lynn, joined the family. With four young girls, Addie perfected her amazing gardening, sewing, and canning skills. In 1964, the family moved to Storm Lake, became business owners and active community members, and welcomed the birth of a son, Michael George, in 1970. They purchased Storm Lake Drug in 1973, selling it in 1986. They also owned and operated Honsbruch Drug in Aurelia in 1983 and Alta Pharmacy in 1994 before selling both stores in 1998.

Once her children were all in school, Addie worked part-time at a local bank and Feldman’s Department Store and managed the rental properties she and George owned. She spent many hours pruning, weeding, and harvesting from her flower and vegetable gardens. Often, George would come home to find that Addie had taken over yet another patch of the lawn for her garden. He didn’t mind because it made her happy and gave him less to mow.

A longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Addie wore a proud smile when her daughters joined the organization as well. She remained active in several bridge clubs, bowling leagues, birthday clubs, and as a volunteer at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and Elks Lodge B.P.O.E #1636 during the time George was an officer. A lifelong Lutheran, she was most recently a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Addie, really, enjoyed snuggling brand new grandchildren and gathering her family around the table on College Street for a big meal and laughter. She liked trying new recipes from her extensive collection of cookbooks, but her goulash, beef stroganoff, and chicken Kiev were the most requested by her family and friends. Her grandchildren could always find fresh multi-colored highlighter pens on her desk next to her stack of find-a-word puzzle books.

Addie is survived by her children: Cynthia Appleseth, of Stillwater, Minnesota, Diane (Dee) Menning, and her husband, Gregg, of Northfield, Minnesota, Kathy Croker, and her husband, the late Brent Croker, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Kaye Wikstrom, and husband, Daryl, of Chaska, Minnesota, and Michael Appleseth and his wife, Ann, of Panora, Iowa; her grandchildren: Katelyn (Matt) Adams; Annelise, George, Hannah, Kallyn, and Wyatt Appleseth; AJ (Lauren) and Kallie Croker; Dan (Liz), Mark (Brianna), and Seth (Lea) Menning; Rebekah (Zach) Sapato; Madison (Jordan) Sutherland; and Brian Wikstrom; and her great-grandchildren: Mason Adams; Adeline, Benjamin, Claire, Gabriel, and Noah Menning, with two more expected in 2016; her sister and brother-in-law, Rosella (Rosie) and Curtis Sorum; her sister- and brother-in-law, Ruby (Dennis) Anderson; and her brother-in-law, Walter Appleseth; as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Her beloved husband, George, her parents, her stepfather, and her son-in-law, Brent Croker, all preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 12, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, August 11, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
