Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Fri, Jul 21, 1916 - After a brave and hard struggle of three weeks, Earl Schaller, died at the hospital in Chicago on Thursday afternoon, July 13, at 3. Three weeks before Earl was taken sick with blood poison, which seemed to center in his hip and after trying to combat the ailment for a few days, he was taken to Chicago where he received the most skillful surgical and medical attention, undergoing more than one operation in the hopes of being able to drain the infection from the little body, but to no avail, death came to him as stated above.

Physicians had no idea that the end was near and he had been bright all day and his mother was reading to him when he gave a short gasp and immediately passed away. The remains were brought home on Friday afternoon.

Earl was eight years old on Jan 12, 1916 and was the third child of Mr and Mrs George J Schaller and was born in Storm Lake. He was always an active, vigorous lad who had hardly known what pain or sickness was and for this reason family and friends hoped that he would be able to stand the ravages of the disease and its attendant operations. He was an exceptionally bright and lovable boy with a sunny, open disposition and was greatly beloved by the family and by his young friends and hearts are heavy over his sad death.

Funeral services were held at the Schaller home on Sunday afternoon where a large number of friends gathered. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery.

The little fellow leaves his father and mother, his sister Katherine and brothers, Harry and Robert, his adoring grandparents, Mr and Mrs Fred Schaller, and grandmother, Mrs Warren, besides other relatives.
