Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Apr 16, 1920 - Goodsell, the nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Edward Nitzke, was fatally injured when he was struck by a car driven by Mrs G.C. Appel, on Tuesday evening about 7:30. He was thrown to the pavement and suffered a fracture of the skull. Death came Thursday morning.

He was playing with some other boys near the Standard filling station, while his older brother, Sidney went to the library with a book. An eye witness says that the boys were scuffling in their play and that Goodsell ran out over the curb. Mr and Mrs Appel were coming from the west down 5th street and as it was growing dark they did not see the boy nor did the boy see them. As they turned to go up Railroad street the automobile struck the boy, throwing him to the pavement. It looked like the car ran over him but there were no broken bones. Mr and Mrs Appel stopped immediately and the boy was picked up as dead. He was rushed to the Swallum hospital where a hasty examination showed that he had suffered a fracture of the skull.

It was thought for a time that he might possibly survive the accident, as he was conscious part of the time. He was in great pain but all through Wednesday seemed to know people about him at times. He never knew what had hurt him and had the impression that one of his play mates had struck him. His condition was considerably worse on Thursday morning and he passed away about half past nine.

The parents are grief stricken and the blow has been a hard one for Mrs Appel, although she does not feel that the fault was hers. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to her and to the parents of the boy.

Goodell Edwin Nitzke was born on Sept 28, 1911 on a farm near Varina. At the age of two years he moved with his parents to Storm Lake. He passed away Thursday morning at the age of 9 years, 6 months, and 18 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss his parents, Mr and Mrs Edward Nitzke, three brothers and three sisters namely: Sidney, Opal, William, Harold, Evelyn, and Francis and a number of other friends, who will greatly miss Goodsell as he was always a bright cheerful little fellow.

Goodsell had gotten along exceptionally well in school, as he was in the 6th grade at the south school and was loved by his play mates.

A very largely attended funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal church Sunday afternoon.
