Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - May 12, 1932 - Funeral services for "Dewey" Nelson, who was killed Monday afternoon when the truck he was driving over turned in a ditch three miles north of Cherokee, were held from the Fiscus Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon. Interment was in the family lot in the local cemetery.
Julian Francis Nelson, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Nelson, was born at Newell Dec 27, 1899. In babyhood he moved with his parents to Storm Lake, where he resided until his death. He received his education in the local school and later for a number of years with his brother, Albert, was engaged in mason work here. Recently he had been working with his brother-in-law, Lee Thorpe, a gravel hauler.
Since the death of his father 23 years ago, he made his home with his mother on south Hudson street and to her especially his death was a great shock.
Besides his mother, he leaves to mourn, a brother, Albert Nelson of Storm Lake; three sisters: Mrs Elmer Cobb of Storm Lake, Mrs Roy Lewis of Sioux City, and Mrs Lee Thorpe of Storm Lake.
A sister, Mrs Fred McLaughlin, preceded him in death here a number of years ago. The following is taken from Tuesday evenings Cherokee Daily Times regarding the accident and coroners verdict:
"J.F. Nelson of Storm Lake, laborer about 33 years of age, came to his death accidentally by driving a truck too near the side of the road, dying instantly of a broken neck when the truck over turned" is the verdict of Coroner Quinn after investigation of the accident that occurred on road 21 three miles north of Cherokee Monday afternoon.
Nelson was transferring a grading outfit, including a trailer house, belonging to the Evans Construction company of Storm Lake. As the heavily loaded truck reached the outer side of the road, the soft dirt forced it into the guard rail, causing it to over turn breaking Nelsons neck.
L.A. Thorpe, brother-in-law of Nelson and owner of the truck, who was with him, was not injured. A passing motorist and Thorpe carried Nelson from the wreck, thinking him still alive and took him to the office a local doctor. He was dead when examined, however. The body was taken to Duvens undertaking parlors.
