Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Feb 1, 1918 - Sadness reigned in Storm Lake on Sunday, when the last rites for a beloved matron, Mrs Guy E Mack, were held at the Lakeside Presbyterian church.
Elizabeth Newton, second daughter of Mr and Mrs John Newton, was born in Providence township, Buena Vista county, Iowa on Jan 29, 1883, and had she been permitted to live just a few more days would have celebrated her 35th birthday anniversary. She attended the Newell high school and completed the course with the class of 1900. Later she entered the state teachers college at Cedar Falls from which institution she was graduated.
On Thanksgiving day in 1911 Elizabeth Newton and Guy E Mack then a practicing attorney in Newell, were married in the Congregational church. A few years later Mr Mack was elected county attorney and the Mack home was established in Storm Lake.
Two sons, Edgar Guy and Newton Francis came to brighten their lives and on Jan 17, 1918 a third son, Guy Warren was born.
The first shadow to pass was when pneumonia fastened itself on the mother and her spirit took its flight just 7 days after the coming of the babe. Her condition was not regarded as serious until the day previous to her death and her passing was a distinct shock to all. Almost until the last she was conscious and bade her loved ones goodbye and made known plans for the future of her children.
Beside the husband and the three little boys, there are left to mourn the departure the parents, Mr and Mrs John Newton of Newell; two sisters, Mrs Minnie Cundy of Cedar Falls and Mrs Nellie Alderman of Lake Park; and two brothers, Warren and Bert of Newell. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery.
