November 27, 1934 - April 15, 2016

Alta, Iowa

Floyd E. Binder, age 81, of Alta, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, at his favorite place, his family farm, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Born in Oak Hill, Kansas, on November 27, 1934, to Lawrence and Anna (Malcolm) Binder, Floyd was the youngest of three siblings.

At the age of 9, Floyd and his family moved to a farm by Rembrandt, Iowa, where he lived and worked for the next 68 years. A lover of the outdoors and all things mechanical, he, especially, enjoyed snowmobiling, building and watching race cars, and building and flying model airplanes.

At the age of 15, Floyd met the love of his life, Charlotte Quirin, at the engagement supper for his brother, Donald, and her sister, Margaret. After dating for four years, they wed on May 30, 1954. During their nearly sixty-two year marriage, they, actively, participated in their community, often playing cards with friends and neighbors. An active member of the Alta United Methodist church, he, also, enjoyed his sixteen years of service as a member of the local cooperative board. As a senior at Rembrandt High School, he rented his first farm. Known for his big heart and generous nature, he passed his knowledge and love of farming on to countless young men.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Kent Binder; his grandson, Matthew Specketer; his sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Richard Iehl; his sister-in-law, Francis Taphorn; his parents-in-law, Charles and Thelma Quirin; his great-nephew, Benjamin Hinkeldey; and his great-great-nieces, Chloe and Camille Binder.

His memory is celebrated by those he leaves behind including his wife, Charlotte; his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Charles Specketer; his grandson, Michael (Elizabeth) Specketer; his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Margaret Binder; and his brothers-in-law, Edward (Charlene) Quirin and Ray Taphorn.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church of Alta with the Rev. Terry W. Pollard officiating. Burial will follow at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
