The Newell Mirror - September 7, 1900 - Franklin Monroe Dodge died at his home in Newell Thursday Aug 30, 1900 of gastric catarrh with complication arising from an accident, aged 53 years, 6 months and 15 days.
The deceased was born in McDonough, Chenango Co, NY Feb 15, 1847 near which place his early life was passed. We understand that Mr Dodge in his youth was a great student, acquiring a good education and commenced teaching school at an early age of 16 years.
In Sept 1867 he was married to Miss Alta VanHorn. The newly married couple moved from their birth place in New York to Winfield, IL in 1868, near which place they lived until 1874, when they moved to Iowa and located at Storm Lake. They have since resided in Buena Vista county with the exception of 7 years which were passed in Calhoun and Sac counties.
Mr Dodge leaves his wife and 7 children to mourn his loss, four girls and 3 boys: Mrs M.S. Burch of Lake City; Harry I and Fred M Dodge of Rockwell City; John, Myrtle, Maud B, and Lenora L Dodge who reside at home with their mother.
Mr Dodge was sick about 4 weeks but was not considered dangerously ill until a few days before his death. The family were all at home to assist in the last sad rites.
