Leonard Dean Nielson
October 25, 1925 - March 3, 2016Leonard D. Nielson, age 90, of Newell, Iowa, died on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Newell.
A son of Leon and Alta (Richter) Nielson, Leonard Dean was born on October 25, 1925, in Sac City, Iowa.
Leonard attended high school in Storm Lake until he was drafted into the United States Navy on February 25, 1944. Serving his country during World War II, he advanced to the rank of Ship’s Cook Third Class. He was honorably discharged on June 3, 1946.
On June 4, 1949, Leonard married Arlene Brummer in rural, Newell, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Lynn, Gloria, Sandra, and David.
For many years, Leonard worked at Hygrade in Storm Lake.
Leonard was a member of the United Church of Christ in Newell until it closed. He also was a member of the Newell American Legion.
In his free time, Leonard loved tending to his garden. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworker, for which he had a talent. Most of all, however, Leonard loved spending time with his family and always looked forward to the yearly family vacations. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-six years, Arlene Nielson, of Newell, Iowa; his children: Lynn Linke, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Gloria (Steven) Frehse, of Spencer, Iowa, Sandra (Raymond) Krell, of St. Charles, Missouri, and David Nielson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Ajay (Stacie) Linke, of Alta, Iowa, Jill (Keith) DeMey, of Newell, Iowa, Brandon (Karla) Frehse, of Everly, Iowa, Branae (Seth) Robb, of Spencer, Iowa, Brooke (Brent) Frehse, of Cherokee, Iowa, Brance Frehse, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Caprina (Aaron) Wakefield, of Defiance, Missouri, Nathan Alexander, of St. Charles, Missouri, Megan Nielson, of Franklin, Wisconsin, and Dana Nielson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; twenty great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Nielson, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Renee Bladdon, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; as well as extended family members and friends.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Alta Nielson; his brothers, Robert and Harold (Alice) Nielson; an infant sister; and a great-grandson, Zailin Linke.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 7, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Newell, Iowa. Visitation will take place Sunday, March 6, 2016, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
