Ray B. Marshall, age 79, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Ray Brooks Marshall, a son of Charles E. “Brooks” and Pearl (Baird) Marshall was born in Heidenheimer, Texas, on June 25, 1936. He lived his youth in Bell County, Texas, and graduated from the Academy High School in Academy, Texas. Then, he continued his education at Howard Payne Baptist College in Brownwood, Texas, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

On December 23, 1961, Ray married Carrol Earnest in Conway, Arkansas. Subsequently, their marriage was blessed with two sons, James and Russell. Immediately following their wedding, Ray served as pastor of the Streeter Baptist Church in Early, Texas. Then, he moved to the Dallas, Texas, area where he was employed as an insurance adjuster. In 1970, however, he relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he made his home and also worked as a cook on the oil drilling rigs off the coast of Louisiana. While residing in Corpus Christi, he married Josie Cheaters. Then, he came to Sioux Rapids, Iowa, in 1997 and became the main chef for Marshall’s Kitchen, which he helped operate from 1997 to 2001.

Ray was a member of the Sioux Rapids Baptist Church. Throughout his life, he served as a Sunday school teacher and as an ordained deacon. In his spare time, he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching his sports teams on television, fishing, and putting together jigsaw puzzles. He will be remembered as a talented chef who enjoyed participating in “Chili Cook Off” competitions.

Ray’s life will be remembered by his family which includes his wife, Josie, of Hollywood, Florida; his two sons, James (Connie) Marshall, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Russell (Michelle) Marshall, of Sheldon, Iowa; his step-children, Freman Cheaters and Jasmine Cabello, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; his granddaughter, Jennifer Marshal, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and his sister, June Dawson, of Houston, Texas; as well as by other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: John, Jean, Robert, Betty, Sue, and Jimmy.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sioux Rapids Baptist Church. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
