Dr. William C. Rosenfeld, MD
February 14, 1936 - October 22, 2015

East Tawas, Michigan—William C. Rosenfeld was born on February 14, 1936, to George and Mildred Rosenfeld in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended high school in Storm Lake, Iowa. After completing his pre-med degree at Iowa State University, he went on to graduate from the University of the Iowa School of Medicine in 1961. He interned at Philadelphia General Hospital. In 1962, he enlisted in the Navy as a Flight Surgeon. He was assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown in the Pacific theatre in support of the Vietnam War.

At the end of his military service, Dr. Rosenfeld completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa and practiced in Mason City, Iowa, for twenty-six years. During his tenure in Mason City, he served as Chief of Staff at Mercy Hospital and Vice Speaker and Speaker of the Iowa Medical Society House of Delegates for sixteen years as well as the Iowa Delegate on the American Medical Association for five years and the president of the University of Iowa Alumni Association for a number of years.

Dr. Rosenfeld was an Alpha Omega Alpha member with the Iowa Medical Society, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and board certified in Internal and Geriatric Medicine. In 1980, during the Cambodian refugee crisis, Dr. Rosenfeld became the first physician sponsored by Iowa SHARES (Sends Help to aid Refugees and End Starvation) coordinated by the American Refugee Committee. He served two 3-month assignments caring for refugees in a camp in Khao-I-Dang. In 1985, Dr. Rosenfeld was again recruited to provide medical aid to the starving citizens at a feeding camp in Ethiopia. He was recognized by the United States Senate for his humanitarian service, and in 2004, he received the Hoover-Wallace Humanitarian Service Award for aiding thousands of refugees on the Thai-Cambodian border.

In 1994, Dr. Rosenfeld joined the St. Joseph’s Hospital medical staff as an Internal Medicine Specialist. Providing impressive leadership qualities, he served as Chief of Staff, a member of multiple committees, and in a number of advisory roles. His commitment to the community and St. Joseph’s Health System was expressed in 2010 when he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement banquet. He retired from office practice in 2006 but continued part-time with St. Joseph’s Cardio-pulmonary Services. Besides medicine, his passions included opera, classical music, reading, traveling, and his Iowa Hawkeyes!

Dr. Rosenfeld is survived by his loving wife, Roxanne; his two sons, Stephan (Stephanie) and John Rosenfeld (Cherish); his daughter, Ann Klug; his step-son, Mitchell Klinger; and his step-daughter, Erin McCoubrey (Andy); his brother, George; his sister-in-law, Heather Rosenfeld; five grandchildren: Claire, Carter, Seth, Sophia, and Samuel; his mother-in-law, Norma Kobs; two brothers-in-law, Dean (Karen) Kobs and Curtis (Vicky) Kobs; and one sister-in-law, Pat Klenow; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and special friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred Rosenfeld, Sr.

His family will welcome friends at the Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, from 2:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, October 29, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the Tawas Area Presbyterian Church in East Tawas with Pastor Kathleen Rowe officiating. His family will welcome friends at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service.
