Dr. Frank N. Hughes, 88, died on Friday, October 30, 2015, at Arbor Springs, West Des Moines, Iowa

Frank was born on May 19, 1927, to Hugh and Jessie Hughes in Nora Springs, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1945 and entered the Marine Corps in 1946. After completing his military service, he attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and graduated from the Veterinary School of Medicine in 1955. Frank practiced as a large and small animal veterinarian in St. Charles, Humboldt, Hampton, and Cherokee and worked as a Diagnostician for three years at Ft. Dodge Labs in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. A member of IVMA, AVMA and NAFV, he spent the last several years of his career as a federal veterinarian in meat inspection, serving as a Circuit Supervisor for the USDA. After Dr. Hughes retired from the USDA, he became the Buena Vista County Veterans Service Officer in Storm Lake, Iowa.

In 1955, Frank married Patricia Handsaker of Colo, Iowa. Subsequently, they raised three children, Kathy, Helen, and Tom. In 1979, Patricia died of cancer. Then, on February 14, 1981, Frank married Cheryll Mowen Swalwell, of Clive, Iowa. They resided in Storm Lake, Iowa, for fifteen years before moving to Sun Lakes, Arizona, for another fifteen years. In 2010, they relocated to Clive, Iowa, becoming residents of Walnut Ridge Senior Retirement Home. Frank had a passion for reading, especially history, and loved music, especially opera.

His first wife, Patricia; his sister, Helen Hughes; his daughter, Kathy Hughes Custer; and his father and mother all preceded him in death. Frank is survived by his second wife, Cheryll; his children, Helen Hughes Lamote (Bob) and Tom Hughes (Rosemary); his son-in-law, Todd Custer (Mariko); his sister, Joan Hughes; his step-children, Rick Swalwell (Karen), Linda Garcia (José), Ron Swalwell (Ann), Randy Swalwell (Dave Waggoner), and Kim Swalwell (Teri Davisson); five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, with a time for visitation between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow at the Colo Cemetery in Colo, Iowa.
