Gladys Berdell Wilde
April 3, 1920 - July 19, 2015

Gladys Berdell (Lucht) Wilde, 95, passed from this life on July 19, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Gladys was born on April 3, 1920, in Juanita, North Dakota, (New Rockford area) to Herman and Ellen (Krog) Lucht. She began her schooling in Juanita where her dad drove the “school bus.” She, along with her parents, made many trips by train down to visit family in Buena Vista County, Iowa, where her younger brother Maynard was born.

After her parents divorced, Gladys spent the remainder of her life mostly in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. Confirmed at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, she, also, attended school in Newell through the tenth grade.

On August 27, 1935, Gladys married Henry Wilde at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. They made their home in Storm Lake where their oldest two children, Lester and Dorothy, were born.

When the opportunity arose, they moved to the country and began their life on the farm in Grant Township. Gladys would work alongside her husband milking cows, taking care of pigs, raising chickens, and growing a large garden as well as sewing and taking care of the family. In time, their family would grow to include two more children, Donald and Eileen.

After their wedding, Gladys and Henry joined St John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. In 1970, Gladys was diagnosed with cancer and spent many weeks of treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. During and after her recovery, she picked up her interest in sewing and joined the Mission Sewing Group. She would make many quilt tops and help with tying and doing hand quilting. She held the treasurer’s office with the Ladies Aid and helped the group serve at many funerals.

After her husband died in 1991, she remained on the farm, continuing to spend many hours at her sewing machine. As her eye sight began to fail, she would spend her winters at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell. Remaining in the center after having a respiratory infection that left her weaker, she lived with the hope of returning to her home.

Her survivors include her daughters, Dorothy Kapsch, of Waukee, Iowa, and Eileen Mandernach, of Newell; her son, Don (Jan) Wilde, of Burnet, Texas; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren; and twelve great, great grandchildren with one born on July 20, 2015.

Preceding Gladys in death were her parents, Herman and Ellen Lucht; her parents-in-law, Emil and Alvina Wilde; her husband, Henry Wilde, her son and daughter-in-law, Les (Penny) Wilde; her sons-in-law, Bruce Mandernach and Don (Chuck) Kapsch; her granddaughter, Heidi Wilde; and her grandson-in-law, Ron Degner.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at St John’s Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, at 10:00, Pastor David Anthony officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
