June 18, 1930 - March 2, 2015Bertrice L. Stewart, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on March 2, 2015, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Bertrice Louise Chappell, a daughter of Robert and Rose (Vogt) Chappell, was born on June 18, 1930, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. As an infant, she was baptized at the Baptist Church. Growing up, she attended school in Okmulgee, graduating from Okmulgee High in 1948.
On August 21, 1949, Bert married William Joseph Stewart in Okmulgee. Subsequently, they were blessed with three sons: William Lynn, Robert Shane, and Jeffrey Ray. They made their home in Storm Lake where Bill worked at Hy-Grade. For her part, Bert worked as a telephone operator and next as the Storm Lake City Clerk for twenty-four years before retiring in June of 1993. Then, she went to work for Gary Sliefert at the Sliefert Funeral Home and later for the Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home.
A member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Bert participated in the activities of the United Methodist Women. Her favorite pastimes included enjoying Friday nights at the Elks Lodge, spending time with friends at their card clubs, and getting together with various brunch groups. Otherwise, she enjoyed cooking, baking, and shopping. A wonderful cook, she, always, prepared a feast. In addition, she enjoyed collecting Department 56 Village Collectables and displaying them at Christmas time.
Bert treasured her family, and she will be lovingly remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Lynn (Sydney) Stewart, of Gresham, Oregon, Shane Stewart, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Jeff (Vanessa) Stewart, of Alta, Iowa, and Patti (Dick) Moore, of Kansas City, Missouri; her grandchildren, Scott, Todd, and Michael (Jennifer) Stewart, of Portland, Oregon, Jacob (Amy) Stewart, of Spencer, Iowa, and Jamie (Kraig) Kessler, of Olathe, Kansas; her great grandchildren: Zachariah, Ian, Marie, Kaylin, Baylee, Staci, Abby, Ashley, and Hayley; her sister, Carra Lee “Diddy” Chochos, of Marshall, Texas; and a very good friend, Rayma Beeson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.
Bert was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Chappell and Rose Harshaw; her husband, William Stewart, in 1991; and her brother-in-law, Johnny Chochos.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 6, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will take place in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 5, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangement.
