Lauren "Larry" Humphrey
October 16, 1938 - January 26, 2015

Lauren "Larry" Humphrey, age 76, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, January 26, 2015, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center in Aurelia, Iowa.

Lauren Lee Humphrey, a son of Harry and Veryl (Lees) Humphrey, was born on October 16, 1938, in Moline, Illinois.

Raised in a rural farm community, he attended school in Galva, Illinois, and participated in 4-H. Active in baseball, basketball, and football, he attended high school in Cambridge, Illinois, graduating in 1957. Continuing to pursue his love for sports after high school, he played on minor league men’s softball, basketball, and bowling teams.

Larry joined the National Guard and also enrolled in and graduated from barber school. For many years, Larry, his father, Harry, and his two uncles, Clarence and Wayne, ran a very popular main street barbershop in Orion, Illinois, called the Humphrey Brothers Barber Shop.

In 1961, Larry married Diane Elizabeth Bushnell. Subsequently, they became the proud parents of four children: Laurie Meylor, David Humphrey, Julie Reyes, and Brenda Gawthrop.

To provide a good life for his family, Larry held a number jobs throughout his lifetime. He worked, for example, as a security guard at John Deere and the YMCA. Moreover, his love for all forms of outdoor activities led him to work as a landscaper and also as a city transit bus driver in the Quad Cities.

In his spare time, Larry enjoyed playing and watching baseball, golfing, fishing, bowling, boating, swimming, running, gardening, and landscaping. Most of all, however, he loved spending time with his entire family and having a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll with the boys. He will be remembered as a loving and hardworking father, grandfather, son, brother, and a good friend to all and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Laurie (Lee) Meylor, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Dave Humphrey, of LeRoy, Illinois, Julie (Pete) Reyes, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, and Brenda (Phil) Gawthrop, also of Ooltewah, Tennessee; his grandchildren: Jamie, Brady, Cassie, Luke, Jamie, Sarah, Kate, Cooper, Boston, Taylor, and Emily; his great-grandchildren: Rylee, Cole, and Austin; his father, Harry Humphrey, of Cambridge, Illinois; and his brother, Steve Humphrey, of Mesa, Arizona; as well as extended family members and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Veryl Humphrey, and his sister, Sharon Fickling.

A Time of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Mr. Humphrey was the father of Laurie Meylor of Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
