James F. Baker
August 21, 1866 – August 16, 1900[J. F. Baker] … KILLED BY THE CARS
Baker, Roundhouse Foreman, Crushed Between the Cars in C. M. & St. Yards and Reeves, Unknown Boy Run Over by I. G. Train by Milwaukee Crossing.
James F. Barker, foreman of the C. M. & St. P. Roundhouse, was crushed between passenger coaches while attempting to couple them yesterday afternoon. The cars were equipped with different forms of couplers and one slipped by the other, allowing the platforms to almost meet. The unfortunate man was caught about the middle of the body, and upon being released stepped out from between the cars and fell to the ground, bleeding from the mouth and nose. He was taken as soon as possible to his home and died in about half an hour from internal hemorrhage. Drs. Garver and Parker were in attendance, but the injuries sustained were necessarily fatal.
Deceased was born near Columbus, Ohio, August 21, 1866. He was married January 1, 1896, to Miss Clara Streeter, of Des Moines, who survives him with two children, Hazel and Alice, aged three and two years, respectively. He had $2000 life insurance, being a member of A. O. U. W., lodge No. 18, Des Moines. He had been railroading ten years, part of the time as engineer on the Great Western. He came to Storm Lake May 5, and moved his family here two weeks ago. All who came to know him seem to have found a very favorable impression of him, and there is deep and general sympathy for his wife and little children in their irreparable loss. Members of the A. O. U. W. from here and Alta with other friends are sending all the aid possible. Mrs. Baker’s brother-in-law, Alex Rabb, of Des Moines, arrived last evening on the 8:05 o’clock train. The remains will be taking Saturday morning on the 8:05 train to Des Moines where the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon under A. O. U. W. auspaces.
