Valdemar Sondergaard
July 24, 1891 - July 2, 1983Valdemar Sondergaard was born on July 24, 1891, in Alborg, Denmark. He came from a large family of eight children.
After serving in the Danish Army, he immigrated to America. During World War I he served in the United States Army and was active in combat in France.
On March 13, 1933, Walt married Ella Christiansen in Newell. His main life's work was farming in the Newell area. Walt moved into Newell in 1947 and loved gardening and reading as hobbies.
He faithfully attended the Bethel Baptist Church, where he and Ella were well-known for their love of children. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 193.
Due to their advanced age and failing health, Walt and Ella moved into the Newell Good Samaritan Center in March of 1980. Walt died on July 2, 1983, at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Sondergaard of Denmark and Jim Sondergaard of Spencer.
He is survived by his wife, Ella; by three nephews, William and Dick Christiansen of Newell, and Gerald Sondergaard of Mesa, Ariz.; by four nieces, Mrs. Agda (Harold) Hock of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Bertha Marie Fairhead of Fairfield Bay, Ark., Mrs. Marvyl Craig of Rapids City, Ill., and by Mrs. Ruth (Earl) Beard of North Platte, Neb.; and by numerous relatives in Denmark.
