Johnnie Anthony Steward, a son of Archie and Florence Newman Steward, was born on September 27, 1919, in Memphis, Tennessee. He spent his childhood years in the Memphis and Mason, Tennessee, area before moving to the Webb, Iowa, area. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and served until his honorable discharge in 1943.

Johnnie married Wanda Goodin on July 17, 1943, in Elk Point, South Dakota. They moved to Spencer, Iowa, where he worked construction before going to work for the packinghouse. He, then, owned and operated Fostoria Grocery and Locker before accepting a position as a government meat inspector with the USDA.

Johnnie enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening, playing cards, telling jokes, beekeeping, and having family dinners. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Spencer and past Secretary, Treasurer, and President of the AFL/CIO Meat Cutters Association.

Johnnie passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Milford Care Center in Milford, Iowa, at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wanda; one son, Jonathan Steward; two sisters, Mary Jo Glick and Kathryn Steward; and one brother, Gerard Steward.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two children, Daniel (Patti) Steward, of Brighton, Colorado, and Kathleen Shatto (Gale Jacobson), of Fostoria, Iowa; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.

SERVICES: Funeral services will take place at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at the First Christen Church in Spencer, Rev. Dan Mayes officiating.

CASKET BEARERS: Kerry Lancaster, Brent Shatto, Todd Steward, Jody Shatto, Tracey Gunnerson, Chance Steward, Dan Steward, Gale Jacobson.

HONORARY PALLBEARERS: Seth Shatto, Casey Steward, Kelly McKillop, Kurt Lancaster, Matt Black.

VISITATION: Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the First Christen Church.

MUSIC: "In The Garden," "The Old Rugged Cross."

INTERMENT: Barnes Township Cemetery, Linn Grove, Iowa.
