Howard Raymond Porter
June 26, 1923 - July 2, 2014

Howard Raymond Porter, a son of Bert and Bessie (Merrell) Porter, was born on June 26, 1923, in Albion, Nebraska. He spent his childhood years in Boone County, Nebraska, where he received his early education in country schools. His family, later, moved to Marathon, Iowa, where he continued his high school education, graduating from Marathon High School in 1940. After completing his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during World War II until his honorable discharge.

On August 15, 1954, Howard married Helen Lovrien in Marathon. After their wedding, he continued farming with his father in the Sioux Rapids and Marathon area until the older man passed on. Howard, himself, retired from farming and moved to Spencer, Iowa, in 1991. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Marathon and a life member of the American Legion Post #12.

Howard passed away at the Longhouse Residence in Spencer, Iowa, on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at the age of 91. Howard was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Walter Porter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Helen, of Spencer; his three sons and their wives: Gregory (Bonnie) Porter, of Callender, Iowa, Thomas (Joni) Porter, of Robins, Iowa, and Paul (Amy) Porter, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren: Kris (Matt) Breton, Jennifer (Brad) Johnson, and Justin and Danelle Porter; and two step-grandchildren, Hannah Cook and Sara (Chris) Swenson; as well as other relatives and friends.

SERVICES: Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, Rev. Morris Hurd officiating.

CASKET BEARERS: Joe Jensen, Bruce Stone, Ron White, Kal Bovee, Stanley Erickson, Les Olney.

VISITATION: Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, with the family present from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday Evening, at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

MUSIC: “My God and I,” “The Lord's Prayer.”

INTERMENT: Poland Township Cemetery, Marathon, Iowa, at 3:45 P.M., Monday afternoon.

A lunch and time of fellowship will be held at the Marathon Community Center following the graveside services.
