Irving Adelbert Merrill
December 24, 1920 - June 12, 2014

Irving Adelbert Merrill, a son of Adelbert and Beda (Anderson) Merrill, was born on December 24, 1920, near Sioux Rapids, Iowa. He spent his childhood years in northwest Iowa where he received his education and graduated from Arnolds Park High School. Then, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. After completing his military duty, he attended and graduated from a refrigeration and heating school in Chicago.

Irving married Darlene Smith on September 5, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Following their wedding, they lived in Portage, Wisconsin, where Irv worked as a fireman on the railroad for nine years. After they moved to Spencer, Iowa, in 1957, Irv worked first at Spencer Foods for twenty-one years and then at Eaton's for another ten years before he retired in 1985. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing in Canada, baseball, and attending reunions in Texas with his Army buddies of the 36th Infantry Division.

He passed away at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa, on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at the age of 93. Irving was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene, in 1999; his son, Bruce, in 2009; two brothers, Leon and Howard; and one sister, Edith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter-in-law, Jo Merrill, of rural Greenville, Iowa; one sister, Lorraine Yager, of Spencer, Iowa; and two brothers, Eugene, of Spencer, Iowa, and Wilbur, of Okoboji, Iowa; as well as other relatives and friends.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, Pastor John Syvertson officiating.

CASKET BEARERS: Gary Merrill, Jason Merrill, Jeff Merrill, Craig Merrill, Doug Merrill, Mike Morfitt.

VISITATION: Visitation will begin at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, June 15, 2014, with the family present from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M., Sunday afternoon, at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

MUSIC: "How Great Thou Art," "In The Garden," By Margaret Molitor.
PIANIST: Ray Meyer.

INTERMENT: Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Iowa.

Military services will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post #1 - American Legion following the graveside services.
