Arlyn Youngberg
September 27, 1929 - November 14, 2014

Arlyn Youngberg, age 85, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Friday, November 14, 2014, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Arlyn Keith Youngberg, a son of Joel and Hazel (Johnson) Youngberg, was born in Albert City, Iowa, on September 27, 1929. He lived his youth in the Albert City community where he received his education and graduated from Albert City High School in 1947. Afterwards, he continued his education at North Park College in Chicago, Illinois, where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree. He, then, attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

On December 20, 1952, Arlyn married Lenore Johnson at Redeemer Covenant Church in Chicago, Illinois. Their union was, subsequently, blessed with five children: Mark, Brian, Corrin, Sheldon, and Sharon.

Before returning to Albert City to farm, Arlyn began his teaching career in Sterling, Illinois. After a number of years of farming, however, he re-entered the education field, teaching in the Sioux Rapids, Marathon, and Laurens communities while continuing to farm.

Arlyn, always, made his family and their activities his consuming passion. He saw his first priority as gathering that family for church related events, holidays, and reunions of various sorts. In his later years, he traveled nearly constantly to attend all manner of sporting events, concerts, plays, or graduations events in which any of his and Lenore’s grandchildren participated. Although his teaching and coaching days had past, he continued to bring the same passion he had brought to those positions through the motivation and love he gave to his children and grandchildren. In addition, he expressed his love for his farming roots by working with his multiple Percheron draft horse teams and the Albert City Threshermen’s Association. He spent his free time reading, woodworking, and writing his memories for newspaper publication about the way farm life was once lived. Involved in the life of his church, he demonstrated his love for the Lord by serving in teaching and leadership positions on both local and conference levels. Over the years, he, also, participated in civic activities involving 4-H and county related agricultural responsibilities.

Arlyn’s life and memories will always be honored and cherished by his family, which includes Lenore, of Albert City, Iowa, his wife of sixty-one years; his children: Mark (Karin) Youngberg, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Brian (Alena) Youngberg, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Corrin (Ron) Brechler, of Laurens, Iowa, Sheldon (Marianne) Youngberg, of Pocahontas, Iowa, and Sharon (Brad) Walkup, of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandchildren: Joel (Carrie) Youngberg, of Little Falls, Minnesota, Kia (Tommy) Hofer, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Krista Youngberg, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Alan and Elsa Youngberg, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Jason (Elizabeth Becker) Brechler, of Aiken, South Carolina, Kristi (Ryan) Dillon, of Ames, Iowa, David Brechler, of Iowa City, Iowa, Gary Brechler, of Johnston, Iowa, Erika (Bill) Schmitt, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Kirsten (fiancé Justin Hochstetler), of Waverly, Iowa, Aaron Youngberg, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Tanner Youngberg, of Pocahontas, Iowa, Cody Walkup, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Logan Walkup, of Wheaton, Illinois; his great grandchildren: Malin, Ehlin, and Soren Youngberg, of Little Falls, Minnesota; Mya and Carmindy Dillon, of Ames, Iowa; and Oliver Schmitt of West Des Moines, Iowa; and his sister, Vivadelle Youngberg Odell, of Albert City, Iowa; as well as other extended family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Hazel Youngberg; and his brother-in-law, Frank Odell.
