Vivian Edna Smith, a daughter of Eric and Esther (Anderson) Carlson, was born on June 17, 1930, in Marathon, Iowa, where she spent her early years. She, also, attended school in Marathon and graduated from Marathon High School. Next, she married Vern Wright. They lived in Sioux Rapids where she became a homemaker. After Vern died, Vivian married Verle Sawyer in Spencer. The couple bought an acreage near Dickens. Unfortunately, Verle was killed in a car accident not long into their marriage. Afterwards, Vivian married Fred Smith, and they resided in Dickens. Iowa.

Viv’s love of horses began at the age of eight when she got her first horse. Throughout the years, she was involved in many activities: 4-H, the Clay County Fair, and the Iowa Chapter of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). She enjoyed all aspects of working with horses, breeding, training, and showing. In 2011, she was inducted into the Iowa AQHA Hall of Fame. She enjoyed traveling and loved all the friends she made along the way. Her spirit rides on.
