Ralph Carlton Diehl
February 24, 1890 - November 3, 1970

A son of Zuriel and Julia Fultz Diehl, Ralph Carlton Diehl was born on February 24, 1890, in Hayes Twp., Buena Vista County, Iowa. He died on November 3, 1970, at home in Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa, at age 80. On November 5, 1970, he was buried at the Storm Lake Cemetery, Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa.

Ralph spent his boyhood on a farm in Hayes Township. After graduating from Storm Lake High School, he attended college at Cedar Falls. On June 23, 1915, he married Ruth Lillian Thayer, daughter of Harry Enos Thayer and Ida Alice Totman. Together, they raised three children: Paul Carlton, Doris Ruth, and Robert Harry.

A farmer his entire life, Ralph also participated in many community organizations. Always active in his church, he taught Sunday School for many years. In addition, he served as President of the Hayes Consolidated School Board and as President of the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Doris; his son, Robert; two brothers, George and Clinton; and two sisters, Mrs. Lottie Shevel and Miss Dell Diehl. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; his son, Paul, of Storm Lake; nine grandchildren; his sister, Mrs. Lou Schlieff, of Sac City; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Robert Diehl, of our city, and a son-in-law, Ernest Hanover, of Vinton; as well as by many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., November 5, 1970, at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church with Dr. Harrison Dawes, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. John Dumkreiger, vocalist, was accompanied by Mrs. Roger Anderson at the organ. Bearers were Richard Foell, George Foell, Edward Mauser, George Engelmann, Harold Wall, and Roy Hess. Interment was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Hughes Nelson Funeral Home made the funeral arrangements.

Prominent Farmer Ralph Diehl, 80, dies suddenly. Sorrowing friends and relatives paid the respects to Ralph Diehl, 80, at the services this Thursday forenoon in the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Rev. Harrison Dawes, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Mr. Diehl, a prominent Storm Lake farmer and lifetime area resident passed suddenly from an apparent heart attack in his home about noon Tuesday, November 3, 1970. An active worker in the Methodist Church, he also belonged to the Hayes Grange. Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul, of Storm Lake; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
