James Sliefert
December 17, 1938 - August 3, 2014James “Jim” Sliefert, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on August 3, 2014, at his home in Storm Lake.
James Dale Sliefert was born on December 17, 1938, in Storm Lake, Iowa, a son of Arthur and Dollie (Hemm) Sliefert. After attending school in Storm Lake, he joined the Navy, serving on the USS Higbee for nearly four years as an electricians mate.
For many years, he worked at Hy-Grade in Storm Lake and Wilson’s in Cherokee. A volunteer member of the Storm Lake Fire Department, he took great pride and joy in his service to his community.
On April 7, 1989, Jim married Sharon Boger, with whom he spent twenty-five very happy years.
Affectionately known as “Tool Time Jim,” he could repair almost anything. At any given moment, he could be working in his garage on a project with a grandchild or coming up with a plan to fix something at one of his kids’ homes. Always up to the challenge and always willing to help others, he would work on two or three projects at the same time while dreaming up the next one.
Jim valued his family above all else. He lived his life to the fullest, loved his wife and family dearly, and treasured his grandchildren. He enjoyed going out for breakfast with his brothers, all the while they were teasing each other about whose turn it was to pay. He spent some of his favorite times with his grandchildren, rolling around with them on the floor when they were little to razzing them about their love lives as they grew up. He also found having parties with the neighbors a source of great joy. In short, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sharon Sliefert, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Brent (Joni) Sliefert, of Overland Park, Kansas, Shelley (Dennis) Downing, of Olathe, Kansas, Trent (Jenifer) Sliefert, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Trisha Boger, also of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Rob Boger, of Rochester, New York; his grandchildren: Cody, Jesse, and Shawn Boger; Matt Collins, Alyson, Breanna, Jennifer, and Joseph (Samantha) Downing; and Dylan, Jackson, Michala, Sam, Trey, and Zach Sliefert; his great grandchild, Cole Downing; his brother, Don (Dianne) Sliefert, of Alta, Iowa; his sisters: Pat Herpst, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Shirley (Peter) Despotovich, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mary Hubbell, also of Omaha, Nebraska; and sister-in-law, Vivian Sliefert; as well as extended family members and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Kowalski, and her husband, Alves; two brothers, Junior and Harold Sliefert; and two brothers-in-law, Albert Herpst and Art Hubbell.
