ALTA, Iowa - Arthur Joseph Assmann, 69, of Alta died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Buena Vista County Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, with the Monsignor Gerald J. Stessman officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta with military rites.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Barker Funeral Home in Alta.

Mr. Assmann was born Oct. 26, 1930, on a farm near Earling, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Doloris (Egan) Assmann. He graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Dunlap, Iowa. He married June Langenfeld Nov. 10. 1952, in Earling. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, the Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Dunlap. He enjoyed playing cards and going to the casino.

Survivors include his wife; seven children, Tim and Barb Assmann of Hay Springs, Neb., Dr. Dan and Leah Wernimont of Pocahontas, Iowa, Ed Assmann of Covington, La., Steve and Lynn Laski of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kyle and Lori McGowan of Crete, Neb., Sue Stevens of Alta, and Dean and Jean Assmann of Roland, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard and his wife, Rene, and Bob, all of Dunlap; three sisters and their husbands, Gen and Greg Schwery of Houston, Texas, Helen and Louis Stoltz of Dunlap, and Katie and Mello Langenfeld of Imperial, Neb; six brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melvin Schechinger of Manilla, Iowa, Gladys Dolan of Palm Desert, Calif., Bob and Carol Langenfeld of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Joe and Anne Langenfeld of Onawa, Iowa, Marie and Francis Graeve of Earling, and Delores and Joe Jacoby of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Machayla Marie Stevens.
