Verne Campbell, age 96, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Emlin Verne Campbell was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 17, 1917, to Emlin Verne, Sr., and Laura Alzina (Squires) Campbell. Following high school, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for a year. On May 22, 1943, he married Mary Ruth Bennett in Schaller, Iowa. They lived in Chicago during the war, where Verne worked for the Fitzsimons Publishing Company.
In 1951, Verne and Ruth moved with their first two children to Schaller, Iowa, and then to Storm Lake. He worked at Hygrade Foods until he retired. After retiring, they traveled extensively by car and bus tour, visiting all fifty states at least once.
An active member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church, Verne sang in the choir for many years. A long-time member of Kiwanis, he also played piano at weekly meetings.
Avid birdwatchers, Verne and Ruth took many trips around the Midwest to watch birds. Moreover, Verne loved tending the bird feeders in his yard and watching birds all around Storm Lake. They belonged to the Izaak Walton League.
Verne had many friends and loved to play cards as well as other games with family and friends. A music lover, he especially enjoyed Lawrence Welk and the big bands.
Verne is survived by his beloved wife of seventy years, Mary Ruth Campbell, of the Methodist Manor; four children: Mary Sue (David) Heikes, of Smithville, Missouri, Jean Annette Kender, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Paul Verne (Elaine) Campbell, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and John Bennett Campbell, of Storm Lake, Iowa; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Miriam Campbell; as well as by numerous nieces; nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emlin Verne, Sr., and Laura Alzina Campbell; his siblings: John Edgar, Hilda May (Havighurst), Sarah Irene (Robinette), Kathryn Adelaide (Leonard), and Alan Brent.
Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m., May 14, 2014, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m., May 15, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
