Cyril L. Nieland, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Cyril Louis Nieland was born on April 2, 1927, in Breda, Iowa, a son of Bernard and Mary (Grote) Nieland.
Baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church where he also made his First Communion, Cyril attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Breda as well, graduating in 1945.
On February 10, 1948, Cyril married Barbara Ruth Reis at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa. They, then, made their home on a farm north of Sac City where they spent their entire married life. In time, they were blessed with seven children: Steve, Jean Ann, Jerry, Shirley, Bruce, Ann, and Brenda.
Cyril was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City. After moving to Storm Lake in 2011, he attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.
To Cyril, farming was more than just a job; it was a way of life. He loved the time he spent tending crops and raising livestock. He also enjoyed going fishing and traveling with his family. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Steve (Rose), Jerry (Deb), and Bruce (Robin) Nieland, all of Newell, Iowa, Shirley Mitchell (friend, Bob Leiting), of Sac City, Iowa, Ann (Randy) Bonde, of Alexander, Iowa, and Brenda (Coby) Shank, of Clive, Iowa; his daughter-in-law, Ina Rae Nieland, of Carroll, Iowa; his grandchildren: Angie (Brian) Beal; Amy (Justin) Barber; Laura Bonde; Rebecca Goodwin; Andrew and Reggie (Jade) Mitchell; Adam, Amber, Aron (Crystal), and Randy Nieland; Caylee and Joshua Shank; Glenda Schick; Ashley (Reagan) Swisher; Jennifer Tovar; and Briana Woods; his brother, Paul (Connie) Nieland, of Lake View, Iowa; and his sisters: Irene Bierl, of Sioux Falls, Iowa, Jolene Jensen, of Anamosa, Iowa, and Charlotte Carter, of Alta, Iowa; as well as many great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; extended family members; and friends.
Cyril was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara Nieland; an infant daughter, Jean Ann Nieland; his brothers, Art and Pat Nieland; and his sister, Florence Evers.
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m., April 11, 2014, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., April 12, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa.
