Marvin O. Otto, age 94, of Alta, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake.
Born on October 27, 1919, in Aurelia, Iowa, to Henry and Anna Marie (Miller) Otto, and baptized on November 2, 1919, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover by Rev. Henry Wehking, Marvin attended school at Hanover. After finishing the eighth grade, he was confirmed at St. John’s as well by Pastor Wehking.
Raised on a farm, Marvin worked as a farm hand in his younger years. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army. Stationed in England from April 1943 to November 1944, he served in the Air Corps. After returning home, he spent a year working as a farm laborer. Then in 1947, he began farming on his own home place, which he did for five years. Next, he moved to a farm in northeast Iowa. In 1958, he left farming to begin a twenty-five year career working for DeKalb.
On April 6, 1947, Marvin married Lorraine Kolpin at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Aurelia. They were subsequently blessed with four children. In 1958, the family moved to Truesdale and then to Alta in 1962. A member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake until 1962, he, then, became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alta where he has served on the board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Milton and Vernon Otto; and his sisters, Erna Sievers and Dorothy Winterhof.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of Alta, Iowa; three sons, Richard, and his wife, Diana, of Aurelia, Iowa, Harlan, and his wife, Linda, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Darwin, and his wife, Debbie, of Sac City, Iowa; his daughter, Darlene Ling, of Glenwood, Iowa; three grandsons, Robert Otto, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Aaron and Tyler Ling, of Glenwood, Iowa; four granddaughters, Melissa (Kevin) Fahy, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, April (Kyle) Maas, of Duncombe, Iowa, Jessica Otto, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Katherine Otto, of Iowa City, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Avery Fahy and Brynlee and Brecken Maas; his sister, Lavone Sievers, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his brother, Arnold Otto, of Albert City, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Alta with the Rev. Craig A. Cummins officiating. A burial will be at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake with military rites conducted by the Alta VFW Post #6172. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, from 5:00-8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
