Kenneth L. Carter, age 75, of Alta, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake.

Kenneth Lee Carter was born in Alta, Iowa, on December 7, 1938, to Robert and Evelyn (Hix) Carter. He graduated from Alta High School in 1957 and then worked for the city of Alta for several years. Later, he worked for Cargill and Ag Partners, but his main interest was his summers spent on the carnival circuit where he began as an electrician. In time, however, he owned and operated several games while traveling with Baumann Shows, Merriam’s Midway Shows, McDermott Shows and Gold Star Amusements. In addition, he followed his dad’s interest in the Alta fire department, joining at a young age and volunteering for fifty-two years.

In 1976, Ken married Charlotte, becoming a loving husband and caring father to her six children.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Kent; and two grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife, Charlotte, of Alta, Iowa; his six children, Mark (Donna) Haberl, of Royal, Iowa, Mary (Burl) Gander, of Cushing, Iowa, Terry (Todd) Burger, of Casper, Wyoming, Gail (Eldon) Finley, of Lohrville, Iowa, and Luke (Nicole) and Cory Haberl, all of Alta, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Bonnie) Carter, of Stuart’s Draft, Virginia, and a sister, Mary Carter, of Dubuque, Iowa.

A funeral mass will be offered on Monday, January 20, 2014, at 10:30 AM at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Storm Lake with the Fr. Timothy A. Friedrichsen officiating. Burial will be at a later date. A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014, from 2:00–6:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
