Baptized on August 8, 1943, and confirmed on May 26, 1957, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa, she received her elementary education in the Providence Consolidated Schools and graduated from Newell-Providence Community High School in 1961. She attended Grand View Junior College in Des Moines for one year before earning an Associate’s Degree from Western Iowa Tech and Des Moines Area Community College.

After high school, Sheila worked at Commercial Bank in Storm Lake, Iowa, for one year. She married Gaylord Sliefert on April 20, 1963, at Nain Lutheran Church. They, then, lived in Storm Lake, Iowa, before moving to Miles, Iowa, where Sheila worked part-time at the Victor Record Newspaper. On February 7, 1977, she started at Wesco Industries in Denison. There, she, eventually, worked her way up to become Director of Housing before retiring in 2001.

A very social person and an active member of the United Methodist Church in Dow City, Iowa, Sheila served as Lay Leader, Board Chairman, Worship Chairman, Organist, Soloist, Certified Lay Speaker, and Sunday School teacher. She was very professional when it came to music. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, and reading about a very wide variety of subjects. She also liked shopping for jewelry in her spare time.
