February 16, 1925 - December 15, 2013Ruth L. Gorman, age 88, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on December 15, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Ruth Lenore Cooper, a daughter of Granville and Harriet (Cook) Cooper, was born in Somers, Iowa, on February 16, 1925. Baptized as an infant, she, later, joined the Methodist Church in Washington, D.C.
After graduating from Linn Grove High School in 1942, Ruth worked as a secretary for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, DC. During that time, she and her two sisters, Geri and Mickey, also demonstrated their commitment to their country by providing vocal entertainment for the USO troops.
On October 5, 1946, Ruth married Henry Raymond Gorman in Storm Lake, Iowa. They were blessed with a son, Bernard James. Henry and Ruth spent most of their married life in Glendive, Montana, where they owned and operated a bowling alley. For a period of time, they also resided in Marathon and Storm Lake.
Ruth joined the United Methodist Church in Marathon. Her special interests included music, various types of needlework, and playing cards. She excelled in both golf and bowling and received many awards. Her family and friends will remember her for her quick wit.
Ruth is survived by her niece, Susan Gieske, of Alta, Iowa; her nephew, Ray Meyer, of Spencer, Iowa; one sister, Geraldine Holmes, of Escondido, California; and a special sister-in-law, Ruth Cooper Johnson, of Amana, Iowa; as well as by other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry; her son, Bernard; her brothers: Charles, James, Forest, Edward, and Conard “Chub;” and her sisters: Irene, Loretta, Edna, Vera, and Maxine.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
