Lauretta "Lavonne" Stock
July 11, 1927 - April 1, 2013Lauretta "Lavonne" Stock, 85, passed away peacefully at her home in Cerritos, California, on April 1, 2013.
Lavonne was born on July 11, 1927, in Nuevo, California, to Ralph and Ruth Stock. In 1938, the family moved to Storm Lake, and Lavonne graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1945. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she, also, graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949. An All-American Field Hockey player as well, she played the trumpet in the marching band and set the 100 yard dash track and field record.
In 1950, Lavonne taught physical education in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and in 1952, she earned her Master's degree in Education from UCLA. She was a professor at Long Beach State University in the Department of Physical Education from 1959 until she retired in 1980 with Professor Emerita status.
Lavonne enjoyed golfing and going out to eat, especially at Don Jose's and Hof's Hut. She travelled extensively to Europe, Asia, and Australia, and for many years with her partner, Cynthia "Tad" Armsworth, she spent two and a half months annually in Kona, Hawaii. A strong, intelligent, kind hearted, and quick witted woman, she always said what she thought. She will be sorely missed.
LaVonne is survived by her siblings, Walter Stock and Elaine Beck, numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved cat, Moxie. She is predeceased by her parents and her partner of over forty years, Cynthia Armsworth.
