Herbert "Herb" King, age 87, of Urbandale, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on January 14, 2013, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Herbert “Herb” Lee was born on October 20, 1925, to Clarence and Allegra (Schroeppel) King in Schaller, Iowa. As an infant, he was baptized into the Methodist Church in Schaller. Growing up, he attended Eureka #1 Grade School and graduated from Schaller High School in 1943. Herb attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating in 1949.
On February 25, 1944, Herb entered the United States Navy, honorably serving his country in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged on May 7, 1946.
On August 20, 1946, he married Mary Elizabeth Dewey at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller. This union was blessed with five children: Steven, Thomas, Barbara, Susan, and Mark.
Employed by the Storm Lake Production Credit Association for twenty-seven years, Herb worked first as a loan officer, then as manager of the Ida Grove office, and finally as president for twenty-one years. He retired on June 30, 1984, after many dedicated years to and for those with whom he had worked.
Active in both the Schaller and Lakeside Presbyterian Churches as an Elder and Deacon, Herb served as the chairperson for the project renovating the sanctuary at Lakeside in 1973. After moving, he continued to celebrate his faith at the Westkirk Presbyterian Church in Urbandale, Iowa.
A member of the Schaller City Council, Herb also served on the Chamber of Commerce Board in Storm Lake and as an advisor to the Iowa Lakes Community College Agriculture program.
Herb especially enjoyed traveling to various places with friends and family and wintering in Arizona which he did for twenty-five years. He treasured his memories of serving his country and found joy in sharing his stories about them with others. Proud of his family, he cherished the time he was able to spend with them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include, Mary, his wife of sixty-six years; his children: Steven (Sue) King, of Atlanta, Georgia, Thomas King, of Urbandale, Iowa, Barbara (Jeff) Blough, of Johnston, Iowa, Susan (Wayne) Bates, of Scottsdale, Arizona; and Mark (Jackie) King, of Urbandale, Iowa; his grandchildren: Candace (Scott) Foerst, of Atlanta, Georgia, Melanie (Jason) Broich, of Clive, Iowa, Michele (Kirk) Nelson, of Reno, Nevada, Brian (Erin) King, of Nantucket, Massachusetts, David King, of Newport Beach, California, Aaron (Kelli) King, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Michael (Darcy) Bates, of Goodyear, Arizona, Sarah (Reggie) Voyles, of Sac City, Iowa, and Lisa, Allison, and Adam King, all of Urbandale, Iowa; his great-grandchildren: Fiona and Sienna Foerst, Madelynne and Cody Broich, Brock and Brynn Nelson, Sydney and Kinnick King, Kylie and Kolbie Bates, and William and Landon Voyles; his siblings: Joe (Mabsie) King, of California, Mary Lehrer, of Ackley, Iowa, and Mildred (Wayne) Blewitt, of West Des Moines, Iowa; as well as extended family and many friends.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Allegra King; his father and mother-in-law, Dr. J. R. and Eva Dewey; his step-father, D. J Bennett; his daughter-in-law, Colette King; his granddaughter, Laura King; his brother and sister-in-law, C. Wilfred and Rosemary King; his niece, Cheryl King; and his brother-in-law, Linton Lehrer.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., January 17, 2013, at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
