Robert P. Borgman, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at his home in Storm Lake.

The oldest of three children, Robert Peter Borgman was born on April 5, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Andy and Jennie (DeYoung) Borgman.

Growing up, he attended school in Chicago, graduating from Chicago Christian High School in 1947.

In 1948, Robert enlisted in the United States Air National Guard and served his country in the Korean Conflict until he was honorably discharged.

Upon his return, Robert attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology. He, then, went on to further his education at Kansas State where he earned his Master’s Degree in Plant Pathology. Subsequently, he completed his PhD at Iowa State University in Plant Pathology.

On August 31, 1957, Robert married Nancy Niehaus in Albany, New York. They were blessed with three sons: Craig Cain-Borgman, Steve Borgman, and Mark Borgman.

A member of the Nebraska Academy of Science, the Iowa Academy of Science, and the Gamma Sigma Delta National Research Society as well as of the Alpha Psi Omega Fraternity and Sigma Xi, Robert taught at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for seven years before coming to Storm Lake to teach at Buena Vista College in 1969. He was a long-time member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake.

While at Buena Vista, Bob started the interim travel program, served as assistant to the president, and participated in the teacher exchange program with Koka College, teaching for one semester in Kyoto, Japan.

Upon retirement from Buena Vista in 1994, Bob received the Cumberland-Tollefson award.

Bob especially enjoyed golfing, traveling, cooking, and reading historical non-fiction and fiction. He was an AVID Chicago Cubs fan.

Most of all, Bob treasured his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sons: Craig (Reverend Candi) Cain-Borgman, of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Steven (Verena) Borgman, of Houston, Texas, and Mark (Kristin) Borgman, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; his grandchildren: Zachary, Ashley (Jeffrey), Caitlyn, Jenny, James, Nick, Angela, and Andrew; his great grandchild, Malcolm; and his brother, Andrew (Marguerite) Borgman, of Crofton, Maryland; as well as many nieces and nephews; extended family; and numerous friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Elaine (Loren) Leeper.

Memorial Service: 6:00 p.m., October 24, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Visitation: 4:00-6:00 p.m., October 24, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
