Ruby M. Steig
February 01, 1923 - August 01, 2012

Storm Lake, Iowa

Ruby Marian Grieme was born on February 1, 1923, in Storm Lake to Henry and Mary Harjes Grieme. After graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1940, she was employed as a cashier at the Ortale & Swanson Grocery Stores. In 1944, she went to work as a clerk in the B.V. County Treasurer’s office.

On September 23, 1945, Ruby married DeWitt Steig. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Wendie. In 1948, she was appointed County Treasurer to fill the vacancy of the former treasurer, who resigned. She was, then, elected treasurer in the following election.

When her daughter was born, Ruby left to become a stay-at-home mom. Several years later, she went back to help out part-time at three of the courthouse offices.

In 1981, DeWitt and Ruby started Gift World in downtown Storm Lake. They ran it until their retirement in 1999 when their daughter, Wendie, took over the business.

Ruby was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church. She spent many happy hours with her family and especially enjoyed watching her little great grandchildren grow up. She was devoted to them all.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, DeWitt, of Storm Lake; her daughter, Wendie Whitney, and her husband, Bill, of Aurelia, Iowa; three grandchildren: Adam Whitney and his wife, Jessica, of Des Moines, Iowa, Megan Zimmerman, and husband, Eric, of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Heather Siepker, and her husband, Nick, of Sioux City, Iowa; six great grandchildren: Connor Whitney, Aubree and Hayden Zimmerman, Tanner and Hailey Siepker, and Jacob Zimmerman; one sister-in-law, Frances Steig, of Webster City, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Walt Steig, and his wife, Betty, of Sioux City; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Those preceding Ruby in death include her parents; an infant grandson, Jeramy Whitney; five sisters; and four brothers-in-law.
