Jean L. Clifton, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center in Holstein, Iowa.
Jean Lorraine Shaw was born March 16, 1931, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Daniel and Bertha (Huff) Shaw. She grew up in Le Claire, Iowa, where she attended school, graduating from Le Claire High School in 1948. During her time in high school, Jean was known as "Jeanne with the light brown hair," and consequently, she has been Jeanne ever since. Additionally, she was active in cheerleading and the pep club.
On June 25, 1948, Jeanne married Jack M. Lyons in Le Claire, Iowa. This union was blessed with three daughters: Deborah Lynn, Janis Lorraine, and Kim Leslie.
In 1970, Jeanne relocated to Storm Lake with her husband, Bob Clifton, and her daughter, Kim. For many years, Jeanne worked at Hy-Vee as a department head. During that time, she made many life-long friends. She and Bob became the proud owners of Babe's Restaurant/Bar in Truesdale where she was known for her delicious prime rib and other specialties.
Jeanne enjoyed camping, boating, and gardening. Having grown up on the Mississippi River, where her father was a riverboat pilot, Jean was especially fond of the water. Whether admiring the river or Storm Lake, she would relish in the beauty of the water. She also enjoyed listening to a wide selection of music with the exception of Polka or twangy country tunes.
Taking pride in her family, Jeanne cherished and loved the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. She will be forever remembered as a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who possessed a warm and friendly spirit. She had a contagious laugh and an enlightening smile.
Those left to cherish Jeanne's memory include her daughters: Deborah Jackson, of Davenport, Iowa, and Kim (Tony) Weiland, of Alta, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Cori (Brian) Thornton, Erin (Nick) Rice, Brandon Hass, Megan (Josh) Smyser, Joshua (Hannah) Weiland, Adam (Jenna) Weiland, and Jonathan and Christian Weiland; six great grandchildren; one son-in-law, David Hass, of Davenport; two sisters: Wilma Causey, of Muscatine, and Betty Farren, of California; and one sister-in-law, Loretta Shaw, of Houston, Texas; as well as extended family and many friends.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Janis Hass; and one brother, Daniel Shaw.
Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., July 02, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
