Reverend Edmund Lichtsinn
May 11, 1922 - April 7, 2012

Pastor Edmund Lichtsinn, formerly of Storm Lake and a current resident at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, died peacefully Saturday, April 7, 2012.

Edmund William Lichtsinn was born on May 11, 1922, the oldest son of Edmund H. and Lydia Meyer Lichtsinn, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended elementary school at St. John’s from 1928 to 1935. He spent his high school years at Concordia Lutheran, a boarding school in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, graduating in 1939. After two years at Concordia Junior College, studying in the pre-ministerial department, he graduated in 1941. In the fall of that year, he continued studies to become a Lutheran pastor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. Following his second year at the seminary, he volunteered to spend a year teaching at Grace Lutheran Elementary School in New Albany, Indiana. After another semester at the seminary, he interned at Trinity Lutheran Church, Navasota, Texas, before returning for his final year at the seminary and graduating in June 1946.

He married Clara Evers of Rochester, Indiana, August 24, 1947, at Rochester, Indiana. The Lord blessed them with three children, Louis, Karen, and Anita.

Pastor Lichtsinn’s first call was to a dual parish in Friona and Hereford, Texas. He was ordained and installed September 22, 1946. After conducting worship and classes in the county courthouse, he officiated at the dedication of a church building in Hereford in 1949. After a ministry of six years, he accepted a call to another dual parish at Arcadia and Noblesville, Indiana. In 1956, the parish was divided, and they moved to Noblesville.

In October 1959, he accepted a call to Zion, rural Storm Lake, Iowa. This congregation operated a parish school until 1973. In 1965, Faith congregation, Sioux Rapids asked him to serve there in addition to Zion. This arrangement continued until he retired January 1, 1988, after which he moved into Storm Lake and accepted a contract as pastoral assistant and visitation pastor at St. John’s. He also served as guest pastor for many area churches.

During his ministry in Indiana, Edmund began editing the District Edition of the Lutheran Witness, producing a monthly or bimonthly insert for the official magazine of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. He continued this work in Storm Lake in addition to parish responsibilities until 2004, a span of fifty-eight years. In July 2007, Ed and Clara moved to Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City.

During his high school and college years, Ed took organ lessons and played for college, seminary chapel, and occasional congregational worship services. He also prepared print-outs of various musical and responsive readings for worship. In addition, he set up a schedule of taped ministry for the elderly and shut-ins of the church. In Storm Lake, he served on the area council of the aging and as clergy representative on the advisory board for the Storm Lake police department. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, riding his bicycle, spending time with family, (especially his grandchildren), traveling, watching Twins and Cardinals baseball and Indianapolis Colts football. He liked to eat ice cream – the real stuff, not soft serve.

He is survived by his wife, Clara; his son, Louis Lichtsinn, and Vi, of Warrenton, Missouri; his daughters, Karen Clark, and her husband, John, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Anita Longhenry, and her husband, Dennis, of Webster City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Chrissi Buchanan, and her husband, Pat, of Waterloo, Iowa; Amie Clark (John) of Pine Hill, New Jersey, Kate Haisman, and her husband, Tony, of Algona, Iowa, Sara Lichtsinn, of Alton, Illinois, Kyle Clark, and his wife, Chris, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bryan Lichtsinn, of St. Louis, Missouri; his great grandchildren: Chase, Samantha, Lucas, Emily, Ty, Lynnleigh, Logan, and Ava; his brother, Robert Lichtsinn, and wife, Marla, of Fountainview, California; his sister-in-law, Ruth Devries, and her husband, John, of Palo Alto, California; and his brother-in-law, Leonard Evers, and wife, Nancy, of Kewanna, Indiana; as well as several grandnieces and nephews.

Edmund was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dorothy Lichtsinn; and his grandson, Jeff Clark.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Storm Lake Cemetery.
