March 9, 1920 - March 31, 2012Harvey Skog, age 92, of Albert City, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Carl Harvey Algernon Skog was born March 9, 1920, to Amandus and Ida (Anderson) Skog, at his parents' farm in rural Albert City. Baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City, he graduated from Albert City High School in 1938.
Harvey served in the United States Army's 129th Infantry from February 1942 to December 1945. He spent thirty-nine months in the South Pacific as a medic, evacuating the wounded from the front lines of the battlefield.
On August 2, 1946, Harvey married Doris Pearson. They were blessed with four daughters: Donna, Betty, Peggy, and Sandra. Harvey farmed with his brother, Wendell. He milked Brown Swiss cows for many years before retiring from farming in 1994. He and Doris, however, remained on the farm until moving into Albert City in 2010.
Harvey was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and a faithful worshipper on Sunday mornings. He also served on the Church Council and for nine years on the Albert City Elevator Board.
Harvey loved the outdoors and took much pride in keeping the farm acreage mowed and his large garden nurtured. He especially enjoyed raising tomatoes and loved to share the produce with others.
Harvey will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, his love of sports, his gentleness, kindness, and generosity, but most of all for his love of family.
Harvey is survived by Doris, his loving and devoted wife of 65 years; his daughters: Donna (Norm) Kinkade, of Albert City, Betty (Steve) Ehlers, of Newell, Peg (Allyne) Smith, of Des Moines, and Sandy (Joe) Cutshall, of Ida Grove; sixteen grandchildren: Michelle (Eric) Krogulski, Lisa (Monte) Wyatt, Brian (Kari) Kinkade, Bethany (Romica) Stefanut, Caleb (Amy) Ehlers, Andrew (Jessica) Ehlers, Joshua (Lauren) Ehlers, Britta Ehlers, Madison Ehlers, Andrew Mabe, Kelli Mabe, Lindsey Mabe, Meg Cutshall, Aaron (Allyson) Cutshall, Leah Cutshall, and Amy Cutshall; fourteen great-grandchildren: Jenna and Carson Krogulski, Katie, Alison, and Janie Wyatt, Kloee and Carter Thilges, Kellen and Brynn Kinkade, Annika and Timaeus Stefanut, Sophia Ehlers, and Isabella and Jamie Ehlers; his sister-in-law, Lucille Skog, and his brother- and sister-in-law, Don and Dorothy Pearson, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Irene Hedman, Geneva Peterson, Gwen Johnson; his brother, Wendell Skog; and his son-in-law, Ron Mabe.
