William "Bill" Anderson, age 85, of Alta, Iowa, died January 18, 2012, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

William Andrew Anderson, son of William and Irene Anderson, was born on September 18, 1926, at his grandparents’ home in Schaller, Iowa. His early years were spent on the family farm. He attended country school and graduated from Hayes Consolidated School in 1943.

In 1944, he and his friend, Bob Winkler, went to Sioux City and enlisted in the United States Navy. They were separated at boot camp. Bill was a member of the Amphibious Forces and served in the South Pacific and the Philippine Islands, attaining the rank of Signalman Third Class. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned home to farm with his father.

In February of 1950, he met the love of his life, Vivian Carlberg. They were married September 17, 1950, in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Kathy Sue (died in infancy), Debra, James, Dennis and Julie.

Bill had a love for motorcycles and bought his first Harley at the age of fifteen and continued to ride into his eighties. He also received his pilot’s license in 1948 and spent many enjoyable hours in the air. Bill and Vivian spent the first eight years of their married life working the family farm, and he then took a job with HyGrade where he worked until the plant closed.

A member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Bill served on the council as president. A long time member of Serpaci Car Club, he served as its president for a term. He and Vivian attended many gatherings and car shows where he proudly displayed his grandfather’s 1926 model-T that he had restored. He was a union representative and a member of Storm Lake Toastmasters. He was also a sixty year plus member of the Schaller VFW. In later years, Bill and Vivian wintered for twenty-three years in Pharr, Texas. The last few years, he began collecting tractors and restoring them. He was very proud of his Dad’s B Farmall which he had also restored.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Vivian Anderson, of Alta, Iowa; his children: Debra (Gary) Demers, of Storm Lake, Iowa, James (Sally) Anderson, also of Storm Lake, Iowa, Dennis Anderson, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Julie (Tom) Davies, of Mason City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Amy (Shawn) Cogdill, of Woodbine, Iowa, Jeffrey Demers, of McCook Lake, South Dakota, Kristen (Jeff) Leng, of Primghar, Iowa, Jennifer Anderson, of Maryville, Missouri, Ben and Luke Anderson, both of Clive, Iowa, Ryan (fiancée, Sarah McClanahan) Schultze, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Tyler (Hollie) Schultze, of Iowa City, Iowa; his step grandson, Ryan (fiancée, Donna Clark) Buckendahl, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Kylee, Isabelle, Brody, Jackson, Allison, and Kaleb; his sister-in-law, Darlene Wright, of Schaller, Iowa; and his brother-in-law, Marvin (Lois) Carlberg, of Early, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews; extended family and many friends.
