George Schulke, Sr.
July 6, 1937 - November 25, 2004

George E. Schulke, Sr., age 67, disabled veteran of Waxahachie, Texas, died suddenly Thursday, November 25, 2004, near Corsicana, Texas, of a heart attack.

George was born on July 6, 1937, in Storm Lake to Walter and Martha (Schulz) Schulke. He was baptized on July 25, 1937, and confirmed on March 18, 1951, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School in Hanover and continued his education in Galva, graduating with the class of 1955.

After attending Drake University, he married Judith K. Else on November 12, 1955. This union was blessed with four daughters and two sons.

In 1957, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving for four years while stationed in Tennessee, California, and aboard the USS Bennington.

The family returned to Storm Lake in 1961 where he was employed by Iowa Breeders, the Storm Lake Schools, and the Storm Lake Police Department as a police officer.

In 1967, he moved with his family to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was employed by Banning-Lewis Ranches and International Beef Breeders. In 1992, he moved to Texas to pursue his hobby of raising miniature horses.

He is survived by two sons, George, Jr., of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and William, of Fort Collins, Colorado; three daughters, Kim Thomas, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Jill Schulke, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Mindy Schulke, of Arden Hills, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Nick and Rossy, of Arden Hills, Minnesota; his mother, Martha Schulke, of Cedar Rapids; and three brothers, Joe and Bonnie Schulke, of Mammoth, Arizona, Russell and Myrna Schulke, of Winnenucca, Nevada, and Richard and Janice Schulke, of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Schulke, in 1981, and his daughter, Jodie Schulke, in August 2004.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Galva.

Private graveside services for George Schulke will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Galva with Pastor Paul Egger. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 7, 2004, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Barker Funeral Home with the family present. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the Funeral Home.
