Eleanor Gilmore
January 3, 1917 - November 16, 2011

Eleanor Gilmore, age 94, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and formerly of Linn Grove, Iowa, died November 16, 2011, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Eleanor Olson, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Johnson) Olson, was born on a farm near Greenville, Iowa, on January 3, 1917. She lived her youth in the Sioux Rapids area and was a graduate of the Sioux Rapids High School. Following her graduation, Eleanor worked as a telephone operator in Sioux Rapids and Spencer.

On March 15, 1940, Eleanor married Arlo Gilmore at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. This couple was blessed with three sons: Dick, Charles, and Gary. They spent the first years of their married life farming in the Rembrandt, Marathon, and Webb vicinities. In 1950, they moved to their rural Sioux Rapids farm home where Eleanor resided until she became a resident of the Sioux Care Center in 2004.

Eleanor was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids and the First Lutheran Church Ladies Aid. Blessed with the gift of music and able to play the piano by ear, she used that special talent throughout her lifetime to bring enjoyment to many people. Proud of her Norwegian heritage, she will be remembered as the last of that special era. Moreover, Eleanor made her family the focal point of her life, and she cherished the times she could spend with them, especially with her grandchildren.

Eleanor will always hold a very special place in the hearts of her family which include her three sons: Dick (Connie) Gilmore and Charles (Toni) Gilmore, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Gary (Mel) Gilmore, of Spencer, Iowa; as well as many grandchildren; great grandchildren; other extended family; and her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arlo, on November 11, 2010; two sisters: Leota Wellmerling and Dorothy Johnson; and three brothers: Art, Elmer, and Wilmer.

Eleanor’s family would like to gratefully acknowledge the loving care given to Eleanor while she made her home at the Sioux Care Center. They also appreciate the friendship of the residents that she enjoyed so very much. A thank you to the Riverside Church Praise Team and also a very special thank you to Pastor Tonna Parsons and Pastor Michael Lopp for their kindness and comforting words during this time.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 19, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place Friday, November 18, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids where the family will be present the entire time. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Blessed be the memory of Eleanor Gilmore.
