Evangeline J. Mangold, 86, of Alta and Linn Grove, Iowa, passed away September 19, 2011, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.
Evangeline was born November 18, 1924, at Quimby to Andrew Jackson “Jay” Clark and Opal Edith Bogue Clark. She was baptized at the age of five and grew up on the family farm west of Quimby. In 1946, she was confirmed in Rembrandt and lived her life as a born-again Christian, professing her faith in salvation through Jesus Christ alone. One of her favorite verses was Acts 16:31 — “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.”
She graduated from Grand Meadow Consolidated School in 1942 and from Wayne State Teachers College in 1944. Subsequently, she taught school at Rembrandt, Galva, and Sioux Rapids. In addition, she taught Sunday School for many years.
Evangeline was married to Lowell Edward Mangold of Linn Grove on January 12, 1949. They raised their children, Gregory, Grant, and Emily, on their farm south of Linn Grove. Evangeline did substitute teaching, taught at Highview, and then third grade at Alta from 1964 to 1988. She also earned her B.A. degree from Buena Vista University in 1967.
After retiring from teaching, she enjoyed traveling to several states and to Germany. She also enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, reading, genealogy researching, and keeping track of her family.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include: her daughter, Emily Edith Mangold Goertzen, and her husband, Gordon Wayne Goertzen, of Canby, Oregon; her sons, Grant Douglas Mangold, and his wife, Diane Elaine Richter Mangold, of Linn Grove, Iowa, and Gregory Lynn Mangold, of Ely, Minnesota; her daughter-in-law, Diane Sue Huff Mangold, of Alta, Iowa; her grandsons, Peter Lowell Goertzen, and his wife, Rachel Joy Kuhns Goertzen along with their sons (her great grandsons) Benjamin Willard and Isaiah Gordon, of Watsontown, Pennsylvania, John Samuel Goertzen, of Canby, Oregon, Daniel Douglas Mangold, of Orange City, Iowa, and Steven Lowell Mangold, of Iowa City, Iowa; her granddaughters, Johanna Emily Goertzen, and her fiancé, Asael Montania, of Paraguay, South America, Lydia Ruth Goertzen, of Canby, Oregon, Melissa Lynn Mangold, and her fiancé, Ryan Phillip Ryser, of St. Joseph, Missour, and Kelsey Ann Mangold, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; her brother, Alfred James Clark, and his wife, Joyce Carolyn Swensen Clark, and their daughters, Paige Allison Clark and Candice Ashley Clark, of Newbury Park, California; and many other relatives and friends.
Evangeline was preceded in death by her brother, Calvin Arnold Clark, in April 1950; her father, A. J. Clark, in April 1962; her mother, Opal Clark, in September 1982; her husband, Lowell Mangold, in December 1995; and her sister, Carolyn Arbie Clark Keck, in February 1997.
Funeral service will be Friday, September 23, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove. Burial will be in the Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove. Visitation will take place Thursday, September 22, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
