Donald H. Manteufel
March 6, 1929 - April 29, 2011

Donald H. Manteufel, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died April 29, 2011, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Donald Henry Manteufel, the son of Heinrich F. and Ida E. (Wiebe) Manteufel, was born on the family farm on March 6, 1929. He was baptized on April 7, 1929, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Don attended Hayes School until his junior year of high school when, in 1946, his father died. Having no longer any time for classes, he had to take over the family farming operation and help raise his four younger brothers. He lived on the family’s 107 year old Century Farm all eighty-two years of his life. Farming was Don’s life. After his first heart attack in 1995, he became the official “supervisor” of the field work. He retired in 2009 but still kept very busy and active in all of the farming operation. At the time of his death, Don was still anticipating planting the 2011 crops and identifying jobs for the boys to do.

Don loved the Thresherman Bee in Albert City and looked forward to attending it every year. He also avidly enjoyed Nascar racing and reading. He eagerly traveled with his family to cheer on his nieces and nephews at all of their ball games. He always enjoyed visiting family members and taking many trips with them to Denver and Kansas City. He was always included in every birthday party and on all family outings. Remembered for his patience with all the kids, he loved playing cards with them and giving them rides on the flat rack around the farm. Once, however, Don did travel by himself to Washington State to visit his brother, Wayne, in 1983.

Those who will lovingly honor and cherish Don’s memory include his brothers and their families: James (Marguerite) Manteufel, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and their children: Cindy (Mike) Wiseman, of Alta, Iowa, Dan (Kari) Manteufel, of Thornton, Colorado, Randy Manteufel of Storm Lake, Iowa, Sandy (Doug) Watts, of Thornton, Colorado, Andy (Shana) Manteufel, of Windom, Minnesota, Connie (Chuck) Haselhoff, of Ames, Iowa, and Dennis (Kris) Manteufel, of Alta, Iowa; Wayne Manteufel, of Kent, Washington, and Harold (DeAnna) Manteufel, of Gladstone, Missouri, and their children: Jeff Manteufel, Linda Moore, and Laurie Thompson; a sister-in-law, Sondra Manteufel, of Hawkins, Texas, and her children: Dorthea West, of Longview, Texas, and her children: Jeoffrey (Alicia) and Kristin West, of Ft. Worth, Texas, Nathan Manteufel, of Hawkins, Texas, and Daniel (Channey) Manteufel, of Tyler, Texas, and their children: Justin, Tanner, and Daneyl and their stepson, Kazan; eleven great nieces and nephews; and two great-great nephews; as well as other extended family and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Henry (1946) and Ida (Wiebe) Manteufel (1983); his brother, Allen Dale Manteufel, (1978); and a great nephew, Aaron James Daniel Manteufel, (1991).

A joy to the family, Don will be greatly missed by all his extended family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 5, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
