Sylvia E. Swanson, age 96, of Albert City, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Sylvia Elizabeth (Benna) Swanson was born to Axel and Esther Benna on September 9, 1907, at their home near Albert City. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Albert City. She attended country school until she started high school in Albert City. After graduating from Albert City High School in 1925, she worked in Minneapolis as a housemaid for some time. Later, she worked as a cook in the Lutheran Children's Home in Andover, Illinois. Next, she worked as a waitress and a baker in a café in Albert City.

Sylvia was united in marriage to Carl Swanson in the Bethel Lutheran Church in Los Angeles in 1935. They were blessed with one daughter Karen, who lives in Walla Walla, Washington. Carl and Sylvia made their home in Hawthorne, California, for several years while Carl worked as an electrician. In 1938, they moved back to Iowa and started farming. They farmed until their retirement.

Sylvia's firm faith in Christ stayed with her throughout her life. An active church worker all her life, she loved her church very much. In her younger years, she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. In her later years, she was active in the church "workshop" and in the ladies organizations. She also belonged to "The Golden Rule Club," which she enjoyed greatly. She loved to read and did a lot of writing, including poetry.

Carl and Sylvia made a number of trips back to California and later to Walla Walla, Washington. They also enjoyed a trip to Sweden in 1966 to visit Carl's sisters whom he had not seen in fifty-two years.

Preceding Sylvia in death were her parents, her husband, Carl, in 1981, and two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Lucas; two grandchildren: Dino Lucas, and his wife, Michelle, and Lisa Lucas, and her husband, Jim Kent; four great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Cory Harter and Whitney and Ian Lucas, all of Walla Walla, Washington; two sisters-in-law: Harriet Swenson and Evelyn Benna; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Irma Ritchie.

A funeral service for Syliva was held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City with Reverend David Bernhardt officiating. Burial was at the Fairfield Township Cemetery. The Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Albert City was in charge of the arrangements.
