James Neary
October 1, 1916 - May 8, 2003

James Neary, age 86, of Spencer, formerly of Marathon, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at the Longhouse-Northshire in Spencer.

James William Neary was born on October 1, 1916, to Bernard and Elva (Coddington) Neary on the Sioux Indian Reservation in Burt County, Nebraska. He was second in the family of five children.

Jim attended several schools in Nebraska and Iowa and graduated from high school in Walthill, Nebraska, in 1935. He married Beulah Johnson of Marathon on May 18, l940.

Jim worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles for four years during the war. Their children, JoAnn and Fred, were born during this time. They returned to Iowa in 1944, and he farmed near Marathon until 1982 when he retired, and he and Beulah moved to Laurens. They moved to Spencer in 1989.

Jim was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. He loved farming and gardening. He was a friend to everyone and was always willing to help anyone in need. His garden was free to anyone who wanted produce and some who didn't.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister and two brothers.

Survivors include a son, Fred Neary and Sandi, of Marathon; a daughter, JoAnn and Bill Kinrade, of Ames; a granddaughter, Kathie and Jim Obradovich, of Des Moines; a grandson, Craig and Indira Kinrade, of Bondurant; two great-grandchildren, Kumari and Wil, of Bondurant; and many friends and relatives.

A graveside service was held on Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon with Reverend Tammy Anderson officiating. The Sliefert - Asmus Funeral Home in Marathon is in charge of the arrangements.
