Conrad Louis Schafer
July 8, 1920 - May 22, 2003Conrad Louis Schafer, 82, a resident of Mt. Vernon, died of cancer at home on Thursday, May 22, 2003.
Born on July 8, 1920, in Sac County, he lived there until joining the U.S. Air Force in 1942. Conrad was confirmed in 1946. He was a long-time, faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon.
On July 6, 1943, he married Gladys Dierenfeld in Wall Lake. After the war, they came back to Iowa and finally settled in Storm Lake where they raised their four children with much love. Connie worked at Hygrade for thirty-three years and semi-retired in 1981. Because he loved being on the golf course, he then became a groundskeeper at the Alta Country Club where he was a long time member.
He moved to Mt. Vernon in 1993 where he enjoyed helping neighbors with lawn mowing, painting, furniture making, and other handyman jobs.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; four children: Beverly and her husband John Butterfield of Spokane, Brice and his wife, Carolyn, of Mt. Vernon, Kenny of Denver, Colorado, and Kendra and her husband Mike Range; five grandchildren: Jan and her husband Barry Danzig, Becky and her husband Brian Leighton, Dan Range, and Niki Range; four great-grandchildren: Christy Swanson, Llysah Karl, Stacy and Christopher Leighton.
Conrad was preceded in death by his parents Conrad and Anna Schafer; three brothers: Herman, Vernon and Leonard; five sisters: Catherine Nelson, Viola Stock, Irene Schafer, Annaville Myers and Edna Mae Wedlock; and his grandson Brandon Schafer.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Cremation arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home.
