Joe Decker
June 16, 1947 - March 2, 2003

Joe Decker (George Henry Decker, Jr.), formerly of the Sioux Rapids, Linn Grove and Eldora areas, passed away at his home in Fraser, Michigan, on Sunday, March 2, 2003.

Joe was born June 16, 1947, in Storm Lake, to George Decker and Lorraine Goettsch Decker. While he was still a youngster, the family moved to Eldora where his father was a barber instructor in the Boys Training School. After the death of his father, the family moved to California where Joe graduated from Petaluma High School in 1965. Joe was signed in the first ever open draftee #8 to the Chicago Cubs. He played for several years for the Cubs, Minnesota Twins (having 15 strike outs in one game, an American League record at that time) and the Seattle Mariners. He finished his career in the Florida Senior League and was pitching coach for the Detroit Tigers farm team.

Joe is survived by his son, Jeff Decker of Arizona; daughter, Brooke Decker of Arizona; son, Joey Decker of Michigan and his fiancee, Roxanne Szczesniak. Also surviving Joe is his sister and brother-in-law, Lorrie and Curtis Ross, Novato, California; his brother, Kim and Gretchen Decker, Meridian, Idaho; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

A committal service will be held at the Buena Vista Memorial Cemetery, Storm Lake, on Monday, March 24, 2003, at 1:30 p.m.
